Introduction by Sarah Pessin and Audrey Friedman Marcus. A lecture by Ann Weiss on the photohistory of the Jewish victims of the Holocaust. When being deported to the Auschwitz death camp, the Jewish victims would bring belongings because they believed they were being relocated to a new land. Of the belongings, the Jews brought photographs of their loved ones. Once at the camp, their belongings were confiscated (and eventually given to Germans), but the photographs they brought were burned in a crematorium constructed specifically for this cause. However, 2400 photos from a large transport that came from Sosnowiec, Poland (specifically Będzin) were hidden and saved by the Jewish underground in Auschwitz in 1944. On a group tour of Eastern Europe in the 1980s, Ann Weiss visited the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Museum and stumbled upon the hidden 2400 photos. After the tour, Ann returned to Poland to seek permission from the Soviet government to sort through the photos, document, copy, and publish them. She then goes on to show the photos during the lecture and describe the history behind them (of the people in the photos) as well as showing a video montage of 200 photos from the 2400 photos (Eyes from the Ashes)
