The developmental stages of an Internship is a framework for experiential learning. The model, taken from Sweitzer and King's The Successful Internship—Transformation and Empowerment in Experiential Learning, is a working model based on the idea that students encounter issues and concerns at certain stages during their experience in the field.
By understanding the five stages, students and field supervisors are able to anticipate challenges and develop response strategies that are appropriate to their unique experience.
Through this process, students develop the art of self-evaluation and understanding that are key elements for experiential learning and professional growth.
