International education has been hit particularly hard by the pandemic. Closed borders and shuttered consulates have made it difficult for students overseas to come to the United States, and many have spent the last year taking courses online, often at all hours of the day and night. Americans seeking to study abroad have been grounded, and many institutional and research partnerships have been put on hold. And the pandemic is not the only factor affecting international education. Concerns about sustainability, the forces of globalization, the rise of technology, changes in information circulation and journalism, a reckoning with racial justice and equity — all present both challenges and opportunities for colleges and individuals committed to global learning. As vaccines usher in a return to normal after a year of upheaval, what does the future hold for international education?
