At our 3rd Annual Educating Tomorrow's Lawyers Conference, Accelerating Competency: Assessment in Legal Education, Michael Madison from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law presented on how he sets standard classroom teaching aside for an experiential journey with his students.

Instead of an exam, he assigns a short paper. He grades his students on their writing and analysis. "By showing them that they learn better by doing (via writing) than by thinking (via studying for an exam)," says Madison, "I am confident that my students are in fact learning the material."
