Julia Tremaroli studied abroad in Salvador, Brazil
Here are some tips based on her experience:
-Don’t be afraid to choose a host family option even if you don’t know the language
- It can be challenging to balance spending time with the host family and spending time with friends. All of these connections will prove to be enriching during your abroad experience. It is important to find time in your schedule to devote to both of these relationships
- Search for ways that you can connect with your host family and find some common ground. For example, Julia chose to watch Netflix with her host mom which gave them something to talk about.
- Be patient with yourself. Even if the experience seems challenging at the beginning, relationships can develop and you can individually grow by pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone.
