"Philip Hornbein, Jr. talks about his father, Philip Hornbein, Sr. He describes his father's parents, immigrants from Eastern Europe in the 1870s and his siblings, as well as his father's education in Denver, Colo. He details legal cases his father handled while an attorney in Denver, including his efforts against the Ku Klux Klan. His father was born in New York City and attended the University of Denver, School of Law, graduating in 1902. Philip Hornbein, Jr. describes his father's role in the Democratic Party, where he served as Party Chairman from 1918 to 1920. He also describes his father's role in Jewish organizations such as the Jewish Consumptives' Relief Society, as well as his Zionist interests. Philip Hornbein, Sr. (1879-1962) was a prominent lawyer in Denver from the early part of the twentieth century until he died. He was born in New York, and arrived in Denver with his parents in 1880. He received his law degree from the University of Denver in 1899, and practiced law for two years in Cripple Creek before returning to Denver to begin his private practice. In 1906 he married Flora Anfenger, daughter of Louis Anfenger, and together they raised two children. During his law practice, he was involved in many civil, criminal and litigation cases, and represented many labor organizations. He was the leader of the Jewish opposition to the Ku Klux Klan in the 1920s and was active in the Democratic Party, as well as many Jewish organizations, throughout his life."
