Scott was born in Mississippi and raised in Galveston, Texas. In the interview she discusses what led her to becoming a social worker, and completing her MSW at Boston University. When her husband, Cecil Scott died in 1953, Scott moved herself and her father to Colorado Springs. She returned to school to earn a teaching certificate and elementary education credentials, and worked for Colorado Springs School District 11 for twenty years. After retiring, Scott continued to stay active while volunteering for her church and many local organizations including the United Way, Goodwill, Thrift House, Urban League and the NAACP.
